At Beacon, we believe that everyone should be connected in Growth Groups. Growth Groups are small, in-home discussion groups that focus on applying God's word to our lives with the support of a community of friends. They meet once a week in homes all around the area, where they take the teaching from the previous Sunday and work out practical ways of applying it together.  Don't miss out on this great opportunity to connect with other people at Beacon in a more meaningful way, while learning more about the Bible and godly living. Check out the Growth Groups FAQ's to learn more.

If you are interested in being a part of a Growth Group or if you would like more information about the Growth Group ministry at Beacon Church, please contact Trevor Nauta.

What does a typical Growth Group session look like?

A typical group meets for about 2 hours. For the first 30 minutes or so there is an informal time to hang out, socialize, share life together. Often there is food or coffee involved. The groups will then transition to a discussion time for about 90 minutes. The discussion begins with a fun ice-breaker activity or question to help people get to know each other and loosen up. Afterward, we review the past week. Since the goal of each session is to move people to action, we see if anyone was able to put into practice last week's material. Then we dive into this week's study. We look at a passage from the Bible that was taught on Sunday. We try to understand why it is important for us to obey this particular charge. We open up about why it's a struggle to do what we're called to do. We discuss the role that the Gospel plays in our struggle. We brainstorm practical ways to overcome the obstacles and live out Biblical principles. We then set goals for that week, and create ways to help encourage each other throughout the week. Finally we spend some time in prayer, asking God to empower us to live as His children and be continually transformed into the image of His Son.

When and how often are the Growth Groups held?

Growth Groups meet weekly from September to December and from April to June*. There are several different groups and they meet at different times and on different days - mostly on weeknights. People are encouraged to attend every time their group meets, but if you can only attend every other week, or on a less frequent basis, you are still invited to participate whenever you can.

*In the winter, Growth Groups take a break so everyone can participate in Core Training for Christian Living.

Do different groups cover different topics?

All of the groups study the same topics. Each week's topic reflect the Sunday sermon from that week. One of the main goals of Growth Groups is to help you apply God's word to your life. Rather than inundating you with more and more information, Growth Groups give you the time to think about and discuss the information that was taught on Sunday and figure out how to put it into practice. We are called to be doers of the Word and not just hearers (James 1:22).

How do you choose the best group for an individual?

We base it on the person's ability to connect with others in the group and his/her availability. One of the primary purposes of Growth Groups is to foster lasting, Christ-centered friendships. We encourage people to go where they feel most comfortable and able to connect. That being said, there are limitations to this. There are a limited number of groups and your availability plays a large role. Developing meaningful relationships takes time and if scheduling conflicts continually prevent a you from attending the group then the relationships will be stunted. We recommend you find a group that fits relatively easily into your schedule. And we are confident that no matter what group a person finds him or herself in, it will be a positive experience.

How long do Growth Groups last?

There are two answers to this question. In once sense, Growth Groups last forever. Once a group starts we hope it will stay together indefinitely. In another sense, Growth Groups last for 10-12 weeks at a time. There is a fall Growth Groups season from September to December and a spring Growth Group season from April to June. When you join a group we encourage you to commit for at least the season you join, but we hope you will continue to come back to that group season after season. Some groups have been together for almost 5 years. It's amazing to see how God has woven these lives together and the life change that the individuals have experienced as a result.
